Eating Disorders
February 24- March 2, 2025 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week
Eating Disorder Awareness week was first established in 1987. Its goal has been to increase awareness of the prevalence of eating disorders, reduce stigma, and to promote education in the community, with the hope of increasing prevention and access to effective treatment.
Eating Disorders are varied and complex. They affect all ages, genders, and races. They are serious illnesses that can lead to medical problems and can even be life threatening. Estimates are that 9% of the population will struggle with an Eating Disorder at some point in their lives! Not everyone who is suffering from an Eating Disorder may “look sick.” Many disordered behaviors do not significantly impact a person’s weight, the factor which people often confuse as the primary indicator of an Eating Disorder. Some symptoms, such as rigidly “healthy” eating or over-exercise may actually be praised or idealized in our culture. That’s why it’s so important to understand the breadth of disordered eating behaviors and symptoms.
In the spirit of this mission, take a few to watch this video and learn just a little bit about the most common Eating Disorders.
There are many live and on-demand events and opportunities offered this week from national organizations and treatment centers that are devoted to the education and treatment of Eating Disorders. A few links are listed below. Check them out. You may learn something to help yourself or someone you love.
